8 Skin Care Mistakes That Make You Age Faster

Updated: Nov 20

Maintaining youthful, radiant skin requires more than just washing and moisturizing. Along with a customized skin care routine, avoiding common skincare mistakes is also very important. At Ultimate Image Cosmetic Medical Center, we want to educate the public on the most common skincare mistakes we see in our office and how to make sure you don’t fall victim.

1. Skipping Sunscreen

We’d shout it from the rooftops if we could: WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERYDAY! Way too many people neglect wearing daily sunscreen, for a variety of reasons. But if you’re concerned about keeping your skin youthful looking, sunscreen is a must. UV rays from the sun (and tanning beds!) cause premature aging, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sunspots. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days, and reapply according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Not Enough Hydration

A basic rule of quality skincare is hydration, hydration, hydration. Dry skin accelerates the aging process and looks crepey and dull. For external hydration, be sure you use a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides for the best results. Internally, be sure you’re drinking enough water every day, since skin rejuvenation begins within. A good rule of thumb for water intake is to take your weight in pounds, divide it in half, then drink that many ounces of water each day.

3. Over-Exfoliating

We love a good exfoliation session, since exfoliation is essential for removing dead skin cells, but over-exfoliating can damage your skin’s barrier. The resulting irritation can lead to signs of premature aging, so limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week.

4. Sleeping with Makeup On

We’re all tired at the end of the day, but please, we beg of you…take off the makeup! Sleeping with makeup clogs pores, leading to breakouts and dull skin. Always cleanse your face thoroughly before bed to allow your skin to breathe and regenerate overnight.

5. Ignoring Your Neck and Hands

The neck and hands are just as quick to show the signs of aging as the face, but they’re often neglected. Make sure your skincare routine includes these areas along with the face for the best anti-aging results.

6. Using Harsh Products

Harsh cleansers and skincare products can strip your skin of its natural oils, causing dryness and irritation. Choose gentle, pH-balanced products suitable for your skin type.

7. Poor Nutrition

What you eat and drink affects your skin’s health. A diet high in sugar and processed foods can lead to inflammation, which is a risk factor for premature aging. Eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and take high-quality vitamins if you’re dealing with a deficiency. A consultation with a nutritionist may be very helpful if you’re unsure of how to eat healthy.

8. Lack of Sleep

Sleep is when our bodies reset and revive, so sleep is crucial for great-looking skin. Dark circles under the eyes, puffiness, and a dull complexion happen quickly when you’re not getting enough sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality, deep sleep each night. Worried you’re not getting enough shut eye? Try adding just 30 extra minutes of sleep each day for a week, then increase it by 15-30 minutes weekly until you are getting the recommended amount.
