How Juvederm Works
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your body already produces, and it holds many times its weight in water. Juvederm gels are cross-linked hyaluronic acid, placed under the skin where volume has been lost. The gel provides immediate structure and draws in water, which is why results are visible the same day.
The family includes several formulations of differing thickness. Firmer gels support deep structure like the cheeks and jawline, while softer gels suit delicate areas like the lips and tear troughs.
Who Juvederm Is For
Juvederm suits patients addressing volume rather than movement. Common goals:
- Flattened or hollow cheeks
- Lines from nose to mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Lip volume and definition
- Jawline and chin contour
- Under-eye hollowing
If your concern is lines that only appear when you move your face, a neuromodulator is the better tool. Many patients combine the two.
What to Expect
Treatment takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on how many areas are addressed. Topical numbing is applied first, and Juvederm products contain lidocaine, so most patients find treatment comfortable. Filler is placed with a needle or a blunt cannula depending on the area.
You will see a result immediately, though some swelling is normal in the first few days.
Aftercare
Swelling and mild bruising are common for three to seven days, most noticeably in the lips. Ice intermittently for the first day, sleep with your head elevated, and avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and heat for 24 to 48 hours.
The final result settles at about two weeks once swelling has fully resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Juvederm last?
Six months to two years depending on which product is used and where it is placed. Structural areas like the cheeks generally hold longer than mobile areas like the lips.
How much filler will I need?
It depends entirely on the area and the degree of volume loss. Your provider will recommend an amount at consultation rather than before seeing you.
Is filler reversible?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you are unhappy with the result or if a correction is needed.
Will it look obvious?
Not when it is dosed conservatively and placed well. The goal is restoring what has been lost, not adding what was never there.
